5 Safety Tips in Riding Kiddie Rides and why its good for your children

When our little boy almost turned one, we decided to make him ride the arcades. It's the ones you see in Timezone, or in Storyland. I got the idea of exposing our baby to these rides through my sister-in-law who always make sure that their children always get to ride these rides when we're at the mall. At first, I did not really understand why she does it but now I know why.

What's good about Kiddie rides?

First, it's FUN. The first time I saw my little one ride the remote controlled car in SM was so precious. He was laughing so hard and he really enjoyed his stay in the car. The next time we brought him to the arcade he was so excited when he saw the kiddie rides section.

Secondly, it is an opportunity for kids to discover or explore other things. It's not just a kiddie ride but it can also be a teaching moment for us parents. Our little one recognized steering wheels right after he got the chance to ride his first kiddie ride. We also make it a point to teach him the type of vehicles he ride on like cars, buses, trains and airplane.

Lastly, it boosts their self-confidence to try out things for themselves. Of course, there are rides that are strictly for their size and age, so us parents can't ride with them. In my opinion, it's part of teaching them independence and letting them on their own. I feel happy whenever I see my little one eager to go in a ride all by himself while I stand just beside him.

Although it is beneficial to our kids, I also would like to emphasize the safety issues it has on our children. So here are my 5 Tips in Ensuring Safety in Kiddie rides:

1. Keep an eye on your children. Regardless of age, parents should always watch their kids attentively in the arcade or while riding the kiddie rides.

2. Check for loose or broken parts on the kiddie ride. Before placing our children in the kiddie ride make sure that it is working properly or that there are no protruding parts that can harm our children. Look out for sharp edges or loose screw that can lead to bruises or choking incidents for the little ones.

3. Stand or hold your children while in the kiddie ride. What my husband and I do is to hold our little one when riding the kiddie rides. We make sure that either of us are on the sides of the ride so our little one won't fall or would sit still while the rides is in motion. It also prevents him from sitting on the floor or touching unnecessary things inside. It's also how we try to teach him while he's inside the ride like colors, or the parts of the car.

4. Ride with your kids, if necessary. Like in Storyland or in Trinoma, where there is a train, we make sure that either of us his parents will ride with him and not his yaya or caretaker. This is because we witness one time, when a parent let their yaya ride the train with their child and after the ride the yaya could not be found anymore. The worst thing is that the child was no longer to be found as well. This is really alarming so we decided that we will ride with our little one and not anyone else.

5. Let them enjoy the ride. Riding kiddie rides is an awesome feeling for children. As parents let's give them that happiness by letting them explore and enjoy the ride.

Do you let your child ride kiddie rides or play in the arcade?

Making your Passion your Profession

I have been teaching for eight years. In my blogging world, I don't think I have been given this the limelight it deserves. It was only this few months that I realized that my teaching journey can also be an interesting topic here in my blog. I just remembered during the iBlog Summit 10 when a teacher asked in the forum if science teachers can also blog or if they have a space in the blogging world. I have also read blogs of teachers and I am more inspired to write my Teaching Story too.

So let me start with this topic: Make your Passion your Profession.

I teach first year students in a college here in Manila. The subject is about college survival and tips, and one of the topics is finding their reason for being in college. Some of them are still confused with the courses that they have but there are also some who are already decided on their courses. In order to teach the lesson to my classes, I make them watch this movie: 3 Idiots.

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/k_3RqAWI-ks/maxresdefault.jpg

If you have not watched it, I suggest you do now. It's a highly relate-able movie if you are in or have been in college. It showed a lot of issues that surrounds the education system not only in India but in general. There are also other issues displayed like poverty, unemployment, and bullying.

One of the lessons I highlight in the movie is in finding the one they truly love. This is not the romantic side but more on the job or work they will get after college. The movie's message is "Making your Passion your Profession" as what the main characters did in the story.

I won't spoil the movie to you as I believe you will watch it eventually. ;)

So anyway, I agree with the message that in anything that we do, it is important that we find joy and love in doing it. Even if its for school, for work or for family, doing something that makes us happy makes any work easy.

I am produ to say that I have found my passion and that is teaching. I never really knew I would end up teaching but I guess this is where I am meant to be. I love to teach not only as my job but in anywhere, anything and to anyone. I learned make up and I taught a group of staff in  our school some of the things I know. I also taught kids during summer beaded slippers that I did when I was still a bum. When I think about my childhood and past it all boils down that I am a teacher and this is my passion.

Not all people are lucky or blessed enough to be working with their passion. I am grateful that I have been able to passionately teach and impart whatever knowledge I know.

Have you found your passion? Share with me how you found it and how you're living it.:)

REAL TALK: When black and blue are not just colors: A Confession of a battered (ex) Girlfriend

Disclaimer: These are real stories and has happened a few years back. I am now married to a loving and understanding husband and we have a bouncing (literally) little boy. Been married for more than one year and I’d say I have found my perfect match.

But before I have found my happy ending, I was in a serious relationship and today I telling the world a story I kept and as I write this down I  am declaring that I was once a battered girlfriend.

This is a story four years or so ago, and you might be asking me WHY NOW? WHY JUST NOW? But I tell you this story now because I feel I have the responsibility to tell people what it means to be in a violent relationship. It is also about time that I speak more about the experience so I may reach other girls or boys who are or might be in the same violent relationship that I was in. I feel there is no reason for me to be silent anymore, and that my keeping quiet about it will hurt other people or even some people I may now. Now, I am trying to be a testimony that anyone in a violent relationship can break away from it and get their lives back.

Here is the love/hate story:

I met him in as project based work I did back in 12007. I was not searching for as partner that time, because I just came out of a relationship. Then I met him. I did not know that it would turn to anything serious, but we lasted 3 years. It was my first serious relationship.

The first year was not easy, we would fight often about little things. A friend of mine told me that fighting in the first few months or year in a relationship is normal. She said “It’s either you have your honeymoon or fighting stage”. So I thought and believed it was normal and that it will eventually end.

But the fighting never stopped. It became more frequent, more petty, and more violent. But none, of my friends or family knew about it. They never even noticed it because we were happy together in front of them. But as soon as we were alone, the violence starts. It ends, but not for long.

I was a battered girlfriend. I did not receive any slap, or punch or any physical injury until the last week in the relationship. What I had to endure in the first two years of the relationship was worse than any bruise or affliction I was battling with emotional and psychological violence.

He hated my friends. Well, except for one that he had a crush on. He thinks all of my girl friends were flirts and cheaters just by hearing our girl talks or chikkahan. He would say all of my guy friends liked me even if they were already married. And to tell you honesty I only have a handful of boy friends because I came from an all-girl school and had only a few college guy friends.  He did not want me being with my high school or college friends or even with my workmates. He wanted me only for himself.

He hated my attitude. He had trouble understanding that I was an empowered woman, that I was not submissive. He would tell me that women should follow or obey men because that’s just the way it is. He wanted me to be like that, but I would always tell him, I was nothing like that when we met  so I am not going to change.

But I did change. I had to change and be one so the fighting would stop. I was getting tired of all the yelling and fighting so I decided to do just as he pleases. I couldn’t meet with my friends, or spend time with my family without him, or I couldn’t just spend time alone with myself because I had to be with him. I became a please, I did what he wanted me to do, or don’t do whatever displeases him, I had to accept everything even if it was against my will.

My self-esteem dropped the lowest when I was with him.

He would make me remember all the bad things I did in my previous relationship, and blamed me for however I was treated back then. He would take my past mistakes against me and make me feel bad about myself.

He succeeded. I believed him. I never talked to any of my friends about it because I was ashamed to be wrong. I was ashamed to be unworthy to him. All our families and friends saw him as the better person in the relationship. They never knew how I felt and the struggle I had to face just to stay in the relationship.

But I did not remain weak. I started disobeying and lying to him just so I can meet with my friends and sometimes even my family. I fought the way I knew how. I wanted to get my life back.

The last straw was when he suspected me for cheating...with a person I didn’t even know. It was the biggest fight of my life. He threw a cellphone at me, got a knife, tried to jump off the building, and tried to choke me. That was when I finally knew that only two things can happen to us if we stayed in the relationship: I die or he dies. I did not want that to happen.

I hid myself in the bathroom and did not come out until he fell asleep. He was crying, begging, then yelling and angrily knocked on the door. It was only after hours that I went out. In the morning, he left without a word.

With his leaving, I regained my strength and freedom. I fought hard and in the end won. It wasn’t an easy battle. As he did a lot of other things after that incident. I told him I did not want him back and on the 24th of December I had my closure with him.

So I am writing this NOW because today is the day that I want everyone to know and to share what I have learned from that experience.

As women, we don’t have to settle for less. A relationship that does not let you grow or make you feel low or bad about ourselves is not and will never be a relationship worth to stay. If you feel that your partner is becoming possessive or that you don’t feel appreciated and valued, re-evaluate the relationship. Think about why you are in the relationship and if you can spend the rest of your life with this person. Think about how you generally feel about your relationship and your partner. Is it a good feeling or a bad feeling? Do you feel happy or do you feel imprisoned? Lastly, how do you feel about yourself in the relationship, is it the same when you are alone or when you are with your partner? Whatever your feelings are it is always valid.

Talk to someone. Letting other people know of what’s happening can help you reach a better perspective of things. To correct misconceptions or to remind you of what is right from wrong. Don’t be ashamed of feeling that there is something wrong about the relationship. There is no point pretending everything is okay about the relationship and being silent about violence. Violence in whatever form should be condone.

A person who hurts you does not love you. Don’t be blinded by love. When you are loved you don’t feel pained or hurt or small about yourself. Love and being in love is a decision. But deciding to love ourselves first should be our primary decision. A person cannot give love, one does not have. Love starts with ourselves our partner should also love oneself first and everything else will follow.

There is an escape. There is always an escape. You can always say no and stop. Staying in a relationship is a choice, getting out is too.

You will find your perfect match. This relationship and the person you’re with at the moment might not be the perfect match. Do not ever think that this is the only relationship you’ll have and that you can never find another person to love you. You will find that person and you will be happy and loved

I wish to bring this message to everyone.

To girls/women experiencing violence in their relationship, decide to let go and move on now. There is work to be done and although there will be ups and downs in this journey, trust that you are strong enough to pass through it.

To boys/men who hurt their girlfriends, stop and respect women. If you cannot respect them as your girlfriends, respect them as humans beings then let them go. Fix your insecurities and stop feeding your ego by feeling superior over others.

To parents, that you or we may be able to talk to our children about these things. To educate our children regardless of gender to not uphold respect in any relationship and to not keep silent about any kind of violence.

To everyone, that we may condone violence against women and violence in general.

If you are or you know someone who might be in a violent relationship, know that you can be heard and that there are a lot of people who will support and help you to get your life back.

Photostory: My Baby's First Surfing Inspired Birthday Party

August indeed was a very exciting and event-filled month for me and my family. Aside from finals week in school and other work related demands, it was also our baby's first year birthday party. I had about 6 months of preparation and even joined Manila Workshop's How to make your own kiddie party so I would be more guided as to what matters in a party and those little important things I might not notice or forget. I'd say I am a good student of Manila Workshop as we had one successful and memorable party. It was not only fun during the day itself but most importantly I enjoyed preparing for it. Even my husband and other relatives enjoyed the preparation as well.

So here's some of the photos from the party I love to share with you. Watch out for my tutorial posts on how I DIY-ed the party. All of the activities, and decors in the event was made by yours truly with the help of my husband, sister, mom, brother, in short my whole family. EVENT: Zero to Hero: A Hero Sharing Boot Camp

Tomorrow is National Heroes' day, and it is one of the holiday that Filipinos should always celebrate and commemorate. I am a Pro-Pinoy person, I like OPM, Pinoy Rock Bands, Filipino literature, local products and anything that has Filipino taste or blood on it. I also love reading about Filipinos doing great or becoming famous in any industry they are in. I also love Pinoy bloggers and I feel proud having to have read and know some of them. So what does it have to do with National Heroes' day? Well for me they are modern heroes in whatever field they are in. There are also unsung heroes in the country that are not recognized but has done enormous change in social change and do what they can wherever they are.

Let me use an excerpt from Bob Ong saying: "Paano ka tutulong sa mundo, kung nadadapa ka sa sarili mong bansa" or in English "How can you help the world, if there are hurdles in your country"(I don't remember the exact words but its the same thought) As an NSTP teacher I always tell that to my students that we have to help wherever we are, do whatever we can with the time, effort and resources that we have. I encourage them to do one small goodness to anyone everyday and it will definitely go along way. I have written about one of my friend, Carolyn Tongco, one of the founder of Artist Madhouse and for me, she is definitely a hero.

If you believe in the same philosophy as I do, come an be part of Zero to Hero: A Hero Sharing Boot Camp tomorrow at Commune Cafe, Makati from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

Leading the event is Hero Of D Day (HODD), a non-profit social media organization that believes there is a hero in all of us. Founded by a group of passionate individuals wanting to affect positive social change, their vision is for people to recognize the hero within and become everyday heroes themselves – mindful of the abounding good around them, grateful for these, and inspired to pay it forward.

To do their part, HODD collects stories of heroism and publishes them online. They also partner with organizations involved in social advocacies, community development, and nation building. They launch programs meant for personality and skills enhancement as well. One such program is the HODD Huddle, the HODD community meeting. Here, participants have the opportunity to learn more about the organization, attend workshops, and meet other individuals dedicated to the cause.

Andy Samaniego, a commercial lifestyle photographer and visual artist, will be giving tips on taking artful photos using a smart phone. Karen Galarpe, the City Editor for GMA News Online, will present social media writing tactics. Eric Melendez, a writer and researcher for non-profit organizations, a contributor for Esquire Philippines, and a renowned fictionist, will be speaking about writing for social causes and how to creatively tell a story.
